Alienware Area-51 m15x

Posted on 14 May 2008 by Ditto

Alienware, the leader in high-performance computers, has recently declared its newest notebook, Area-51 m15x, as “the most powerful notebooks from all existed”. By utilizing Intel Core™ 2 Extreme processors, the Area-51 m15x achieves benchmarks unsurpassed by any other notebook in its class. HD video and audio editing, 3D animation and high-end PC gaming suddenly don’t seem as resource intensive as before. Increased processor efficiency means you can work away from your power cable worry-free.

The number of model name corresponds to the diagonal of display (15,4 17 inches) and is equipped with the Core 2 Duo Extreme processors, NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTX video card, 667 MHz DDR2, writing Blu-ray-drive (in Area-51 m17x model or writing DVD-drive in m15).

Power users who pride themselves on having the most advanced laptops are happy to trade portability and desk space for a massive 17-inch desktop replacement with the latest high-end components. Those same hardware fetishists should be kicking themselves now that Alienware has gone all-in on a new 15-inch system, the impressive $3,899 Area-51 m15x, outfitting it with Nvidia’s GeForce 8800M GTX video card (previously found only in 17-inch systems) and the fastest laptop CPU around right now, the Intel Core 2 Extreme X9000. Of course, this tricked out config cost nearly double the $2,149 base price.

As the name suggests it’s based on a 15.4in form factor and, unlike the plethora of other so called “gaming notebooks” of this size, this is the real deal since it features the very best components available; in this instance a 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme X9000 and nVidia’s GeForce 8800M GTX 512MB mobile graphics card. These are both firsts for a notebook of this size and given the requirements of heat dissipation, it’s no mean feat.

At full power this laptop pulls a whopping 70 or more watts, but this is where the magic comes in as that would give it a battery life measured in minutes (as opposed to hours). You can more than cut this power usage in half by switching to Intel integrated graphics and enabling a feature called “stealth” which steps the powerful Intel Extreme Edition processor down into something less than boiling hot, or around 30 watts.

Thanks to a backlit keyboard, touch-pad border, logo, alien head, and screen border, the m15x has more lights than a Christmas tree (but note that the backlit keyboard is a $50 add-on). The Alienware Command Center is a software app used to control the lighting, and you can assign different colors to every section or use one color across all the lights. Unlike Dell’s XPS M1730, the lights won’t strobe or flash, but the backlit keyboard is especially cool, and it’s good for accurate typing in low-light situations.

Lenovo IdeaPad U110

Posted on 10 May 2008 by Ditto

Last month, Lenovo announced the release of the IdeaPad U110 consumer notebook PC, the star of Lenovo’s IdeaPad entertainment and fashion-oriented notebook collection.

Lenovo IdeaPad U110 Reviews

The IdeaPad U110 has been made for performance with a 120GB hard drive, up to 3GB of memory, Intel Centrino processor, a built-in camera, WLAN, Ethernet and Bluetooth connectivity (optional), an external DVD burner and the Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium operating system. It also comes with an additional battery for increased battery life. The laptop’s 11.1″ widescreen display with LED backlighting has a resolution of 1366-by-768 pixels. Currently the Lenovo IdeaPad U110 is around $1,899 price tag.

The U110 is incredibly easy to carry around at only 2.4lbs of weight. It was simple to hold and palm in the hand for the purpose of taking pictures for instance. It’s all wrapped up in a stylish textured design that features a red aluminum alloy top cover and cool touch-sensitive media controls. If you can do without a built-in optical drive, the Lenovo IdeaPad U110 has it all.

Dell Vostro 1310

Posted on 21 April 2008 by Ditto

Dell introduced a new redesigned Vostro notebook lineup earlier this month designed for small businesses. The lineup now consists of the $749 13.3 inch Vostro 1310, and the $599 15.4 inch Vostro 1510 - both of which are available starting today in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, North and South America will get these two new models on May 1st while Asia Pacific and Japan will get them on May 5th.

The Vostro 1310 is the newest and smallest addition to the vostro family of notebooks. This compact business notebook comes with a 13.3″ display, dedicated graphics and a slot-loading optical drive, but does it still offer the right combination of features, options, and price that made the Vostro line so popular? The Vostro 1310 (pictured below) offers almost the same screen real estate as the larger Vostro 1400 notebook, but weighs almost 20% less. For the 1310, pricing starts at $749.

dell vostro 1310The Vostro 1310 (shown on the left) is also Dell’s first 13.3-inch Vostro and provides the same 1280×800 screen resolution of the 14-inch Vostro 1400 in a smaller, lighter (4.6-pound) frame. The Vostro 1310 did trail the XPS M1330 on the multimedia multitasking portion of our tests, most likely because of its processor’s smaller L2 cache. But during our use we found it more than adequate for switching back and forth between a media player, Web browser, and Office applications. The Vostro 1310 (pictured on the left) offers almost the same screen real estate as the larger Vostro 1400 notebook , but weighs almost 20% less. For the 1310, pricing starts at $749.

The Vostro 1310 is in fact roughly 20% smaller and lighter than the Vostro 1400 . The Vostro 1310 laptop is a 13.3-inch machine, weighing 4.6 pounds, and is priced from $749. The Vostro 1510 laptop is a 15-incher weighing in at 5.7 pounds, priced starting from $599. The Vostro 1310 is the newest and smallest addition to the Vostro family of notebooks. The HP 2133 Mini-Note has a 92 percent full-size keyboard that is comfortable to use. The keyboard is big enough for smaller hands, but not so tightly cramped that large hands will have difficulty typing.

The HP 2133 Mini-Note comes installed with Vista Business and while hardly dog-slow, it was no speed demon, either. The HP 2133 Mini-Note might be just the thing to meet that need. With the ability to stay connected anywhere and its sturdy all-aluminum case this laptop makes a perfect traveling partner for the business person who’s constantly on the go.

Compared to most laptops in this price range, the 2133 looks like it should cost a good deal more, with a solid brushed aluminium lid and a magnesium-alloy chassis. The system weighs a bit less than 1.5kg, but due to its small size, feels heavier than you would expect. Compared to the screens on other subnotebooks priced below $1,000, the screen on the HP 2133 Mini-Note is beyond beautiful. Most notebooks that we review (regardless of size or price) would be lucky to have a screen like this.
