Shortly after Braniff Airlines went out of business for good, Sun Country Airlines came into being. A small core group of former Braniff professionals decided to start their own small airline. Minnesota was the base of operations for Sun Country; out of the Minneapolis area.

In the earliest days, the grand total number of people working at Sun Country was thirty three. Being they all understood what needed to be done, and they were accustomed to the demands of running an airline. It was truly a group effort because the air and flight attendant crews all helped with various jobs. That should come as no surprise at all since they had to get things done no matter what. All of that sacrifice paid off because in just two short months they were making net profits.

In the earliest days, the grand total number of people working at Sun Country was thirty three. This core group of employees were trained in the trenches at Braniff, so they had a good handle on everything. It was truly a group effort because the air and flight attendant crews all helped with various jobs. But they were highly motivated and wanted to succeed, and therefore they did what was necessary to become successful. Their profitability did not take long at all, and it in fact happened very quickly in several months.

Unfortunately, they were not strong enough to endure the sanctions imposed on US carriers after Sept 11, 2001. They did finally bring everything to a close by the end of 2001. In July of 2010 they announced their placement as a top 10 domestic airline in Travel & Leisure magazine. This recognition is part of T & L’s World Best Service Award for 2010. This award is based on the surveys of those who actually fly the various airways. The ranking is includes grades for customer satisfaction in the areas of personal attention and personal service. Only those domestic airline carriers eligible for the pool are included in the surveys. Which of course makes it especially satisfying for Sun Country to have made the list.

About one year ago, in December of 2009, Sun Country Airlines treated a group of 80 children in ages ranging from 5 -12 to an imaginary flight to the North Pole. They gave it the obvious name: A Flight To The North Pole. Local chapters of United Way – Big Brothers and Big Sisters were also involved in this event. The goal was simply to give the youngsters a truly one of a kind and unique Christmas holiday experience. What they did was taxi the plane for half an hour on the field and employees pretended they were flying to the North Pole.
