without comments

Becoming good at taking photographs doesn’t happen overnight; it’s a gradual process that requires a great deal of practice, and it requires that you ask a lot of questions. One of the most common questions that many photographers have is how to take better photos in low light situations? They often think that there is one particular camera that will allow them to capture spectacular low-light photos, though this isn’t necessarily the case. It’s understandable that people become frustrated when their camera hunts to gain focus in low light situations only to product an image that is ultimately undesirable. Regardless of the type of camera you own, there a few tips that can turn blurry and/or dark photos into clear and crisp shots that you will be proud of.

For most people, upgrading to an expensive feature-packed DSLR camera to improve their low-light photography skills simply isn’t an option. Because of this, the focus of this article will be to provide some simple and affordable suggestions that will help you to improve your images. Before deciding on which option might be best for your situation, it’s important to have an understanding of why cameras often fail to product the results we expect under low-light conditions.

In order to capture an image on film or on digital media, a camera must first call for the lens to open in order to record a sufficient amount of visual data. Under low light conditions, the lens must stay open for a considerable amount of time to capture the same data that would otherwise be captured quickly under ambient light conditions. The two most important aspects when taking photos under low light conditions are to keep the camera still and to provide sufficient lighting from a natural or artificial source.

Perhaps the most common solution for preventing camera shake is through the use of a tripod or some other device that hold the camera in a stationary position. At this point it is much less likely for your hands to bump or move the camera while it is exposing an image. Fortunately, tripods are widely available and don’t have to cost an arm and a leg. In fact, many can be purchase for under $50.00 for an entry level model. The price goes up for lighter and/or more portable options.

The next solution is to integrate some flash photography into your repertoire. While most point-and-shoot style cameras come equipped with a less than stellar flash system, they are capable of providing sufficient light under some circumstances such as indoor situations. The light coming from a camera flash can make the difference between having enough light to capture a clear image and having a blurred image. It should be mentioned that flash should only be reserved for situations where a need exists for slight illumination of the subject. It should not be used in very dark situations, since the result will likely be an overexposed subject and an underexposed background.

Apart from the tips mentioned above, another option may be to consider an upgrade to a digital SLR camera, since many of these cameras can accommodate larger flash units and faster lenses. Whatever method you choose to follow, it’s important to understand the limitations of your current equipment. By knowing what your camera can and can’t accomplish you will be in a better position to capture beautiful low light photos.
