Installing A Doorbell Yourself

without comments

If you wish to install a doorbell in your home but not able to find an electrician to do the job then it is time to take the assignment in your own hands. Wiring your doorbell to the rest of the electrical framework is simple enough to be handled even by a novice.

The most appropriate time to install and wire a doorbell is during the revamping or remodeling of your home. Since all the internal wires are at your disposal at that time hence it becomes quite easy to make the necessary adjustments.

In case of a finished electrical setup, a wireless doorbell is preferred as it doesn’t call for the exposure of the internal wiring schema.

If however you have already bought a typical doorbell and wish to install/wire it then apprehend the working of the doorbell first. Th three components that form the part of the operation of a regular doorbell are the transformer, the chime box and the doorbell board. The wires leading from the transformer to the chime box use only 12 volts of voltage and hence, are quite safe to work with. The doorbell transformer is connected to the main power supply and fetches 120 volts.

Beforehand, shut off the main power supply from the fuse box or the breaker box. Always remember to cut off the electricity whenever an electrical repair or installation is underway.

Arrange all the basic electrical tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, insulating tape, voltage testers, cutters etc. before moving to the project site.

Tear off some insulation from the hot (black) and neutral (white) wires of the home power circuit and attach them well to the screws of the doorbell transformer. The two wires leading from the transformer are then connected to one or two chime boxes depending on the number of locations controlled by the doorbell. Install the chime box on the wall or ceiling and connect it to the doorbell.

Restore normal electricity supply to your home and test the functioning of the newly installed doorbell.
