Kodak Zi6 Pocket Video Camera Review

Posted on 11 October 2008 by Ditto

The Kodak Zi6 can record 720p at 60 frames per second, a step above the 640×480-pixel VGA resolution you get with other pocket camcorders. Available in black (pink is coming soon), the Zi6 has a 2.4″ LCD and an expandable SD/SDHC card slot that holds cards up to 32 GB (you’ll need a memory card because the camcorder doesn’t come with much built-in memory). The Kodak Zi6, which can be ordered at Kodak.com but won’t ship until September, is the imaging company’s entry into this category. It offers key differences over the Mino, including a bigger viewing screen and the ability to shoot in high definition. The Kodak Zi6 is a handheld digital camcorder, much like the highly successful “Flip Camcorder ” that made its way to retail stores in the past year. The ZI6 is different though; it can record HD video files.

The Kodak Zi6 is also available in black for those that may not dig pink as much. The design is very compact and light to hold. The Kodak Zi6 HD pocket video camera looks like it will be a YouTube addict and video pod-casters dream. This hand-held digital camcorder is cheap (as hand-held camcorders go) and cheerful but comes packed with a range of features. The Kodak Zi6 stands out for offering high-definition quality video in a camcorder this size. But it’s not clear why you’d want such a combination.

The Kodak Zi6 is designed to operate at the touch of a button - there is no lens cap, dials to turn or settings to adjust. The KODAK Zi6 Pocket Video Camera satisfies their thirst for an HD video camera that is simple to use and can go anywhere life takes them,?

The Kodak zi6 will be available in early October and will have a price tag of around $180. The Kodak Zi6 is available in pink and black, and can be purchased directly from the Kodak store . The Kodak Zi6 also includes 2 AA rechargeable batteries, battery charger, case, wrist strap, and photo software.

(Very good)

The good: Solid 720p video; comparatively large LCD; memory-card expansion slot; AA rechargeable batteries included along with protective carrying case and video output cables.

The bad: Insufficient onboard memory and price doesn’t include an optional memory card; can’t recharge batteries via USB connector; included software isn’t Mac compatible.

The bottom line: While bigger than most of its competitors and high priced for a mini camcorder, the Kodak Zi6’s attractive design and decent video quality adequately compensate for some usability drawbacks.

Flip Video Mino Review

Flip Video Mino Review

The Flip Video Mino is the fourth generation of Pure Digital’s popular straight-to-Web mini camcorder, designed to make shooting and sharing low-resolution videos very easy. Thinner, smaller, and lighter than its older and less expensive sibling, the Flip Video Ultra, the Mino crams similar technology into a more compact, more attractive package that integrates a rechargeable lithium ion battery. The Flip Video Mino crams new technology into a compact and very attractive package that utilizes a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. The Flip Video mino is a very cool device, and the iVideo generation will probably be the ones posting their clips online for the world to see. Pure Digital has really made it easy to capture video content with this device.

The Flip Video Mino is great for anybody who wants a video camera on the go. As a blogger, I find it handy to be able to easily record quick videos with no preparation required. The Flip Video Mino and Flip Ultra don?t have all the bells and whistles that other camcorders have, but it has what you need for everyday home videos. The Flip Video Mino produces a 640 x 480 pixel resolution and will take 30 frames per second. There’s a 2x zoom for taking still or video images in fairly close range.

Smaller than most cell phones, Mino fits neatly into a jeans pocket to capture life’s stories whenever and wherever they happen—at a party, a concert, the beach, even on a bike ride. The Mino also features Flip Video’s built-in software that lets you simply plug the camcorder ’s signature flip-out USB arm into any computer for immediate editing and sharing. Flip: Press Release

Pure Digital Technologies introduces Flip Video Mino, the company’s latest innovation in its popular, critically-acclaimed Flip Video family of camcorders. Weighing in at just over three ounces, the remarkably slim yet powerful Flip Video Mino raises the bar for high-quality, portable, and easy-to-use video. Smaller than most cell phones, Mino fits neatly into a jeans pocket to capture life’s stories whenever and wherever they happen — at a party, a concert, the beach, even on a bike ride. The $179.99 (MSRP) Mino also features Flip Video’s built-in software that allows consumers to simply plug the camcorder’s signature flip-out USB arm into any computer for immediate editing and sharing. For the first time, the Flip Video software enables users to upload video directly to MySpace as well as to YouTube and AOL Video, making it even easier to share video.

“Flip Video Mino delivers the perfect combination of high-quality video, sleek design, and ease of use,” said Jonathan Kaplan, CEO of Pure Digital Technologies. “For the millions who share their lives online every day, it’s more than a camcorder — it’s a fun tool for communicating and creatively expressing themselves.”

With 2GB of on-board flash memory, Mino allows consumers to capture up to 60 minutes of high-quality video using the camcorder’s intuitive new touch-sensitive buttons to record, play, fast forward, rewind, pause and delete. Users can instantly play back video on the camcorder’s 1.5-inch anti-glare LCD display. Mino uses an internal, rechargeable lithium-ion battery that conveniently recharges whenever the camcorder’s USB arm is connected to a computer and provides more than four hours of recording time on a single charge.

Using Mino’s built-in software, consumers are able to edit and share videos instantly from a PC or Mac. In addition to quickly posting videos on sharing and social networking sites, they can email videos and video greeting cards; create custom movies with their own music; capture still photos from video; save and organize videos on the computer; and, for the first time, seamlessly order and send DVDs anywhere in the world.

“Video is a major part of the MySpace experience and the Mino’s portable design means MySpace users can capture their life as it happens,” said Josh Brooks, vice president of marketing for MySpace. “We are excited to partner with Flip Video to make it easier than ever for MySpace users to directly upload and share content on MySpaceTV.”
