Unlike way back when police work was just sitting watching for speeders and writing tickets, police work has become more complicated. Criminals are learning how to outsmart the police and having the wireless tools available could put the cops back in the playing field. It’s important to be able to retrieve information while investigating in the field.
Here’s something to think about. There he is, the police officer in his patrol car and he spots a suspicious character. He types in the plate number of the vehicle into his wireless laptop and poof its confirmed; a stolen car. After notifying dispatch, he pulls the car over, suspect apprehended, all in a matter of minutes.
There was no time wasted calling in the plate number, and then waiting for the dispatcher to run the plate, then more time waiting for the reply. All the while, probably having to wait his turn on the radio, while he is following the suspected car their. Having the wireless laptop has just saved critical minutes and prevented a possible chase endangering lives.
As you can imagine, the expense of providing wireless laptops for all police vehicles in any given jurisdiction can be very costly. Departments all over the U.S. are continuing to work on approval of funding to make the money available when products are ready to roll out. Technicians are also working to allow access to both state and federal databases.
Officers today have limited access to critical information that is transmitted to their vehicles. Shouldn’t they be allowed to have the tools to make their jobs more efficient with all the wireless technology we have available out there. After all, most office personnel have the latest and greatest, why not law enforcement.
As municipalities all over this great country await the introduction of wireless vehicle mounted laptops, we continue to praise the efforts to keep our local law enforcement that patrol our streets safe. Soon you will be working with wireless technology that will make you even more efficient. Your new and enhanced fighting tools are on their way!
